Peoria’s Old state hospital building before being demolished

Bartonville has been known by its name since at least 1878 when a Post Office was opened and dedicated in the name of W.C.H. Barton. In it’s early days mining was the big industry and the town was described as being “populated by dogs and drunken miners”. The area to this day is full of old mine shafts.

Governance didn’t come about in Bartonville till 1903 when Henry R Gerdes became mayor. At the turn of the century the State of Illinois had also just finished building the Peoria State Hospital. One of the last buildings in the hospital complex was demolished just a few years ago, and the site was long rumored to have been haunted.

The town has seen alot of growth and changes over the years from H.E. Lauterbach Lumber Company, Keystone Steel & Wire, CEFCU, and the airport being named in honor of the late General Wayne Downing of Peoria.
